"I, Louise, felt very proud to be featured in The Hat Magazine, an English publication that is distributed internationally. I felt honoured to be included in such a well respected magazine. The editor, Carol Denford, came to Australia to do a feature on Melbourne milliners around the time of the Melbourne Cup in 2009. I was one of the milliners she chose to feature:
'Everything in the studio is made by hand, the finished work is exquisite, it is feminine and light, personal to the wearer, detailed and has a kind of movement particular to her label.'"

Heads Set to Turn at Dubai World Cup
"Hat fashion is as important as the race itself. And it's that one time when women can really dress up and portray their personality," said milliner Louise Macdonald with 17 years experience of hat history with a Hollywood cliental.
It's all about making heads turn and that flamboyant, lacey hat, tipped to the side is sure to garner many envious glances and make many eyes pop.
"We've moved away from using feathers. Intricately sculptured hats with bright bold colours is what one should be looking for," advised?Macdonald.
Macdonald has used vintage material for her 2009 collection. "I collect vintage material from around the world and this one that I'm wearing is made of patent straw braid." She pointed to the laced purple ribbon hat tipped to the side of her head. "Big hats suit tall women while smaller hats complement any woman. Also smaller hats are easier to pack," she said.

Head over heels: The best hats to wear for the Dubai World Cup
"Dubai is such a flamboyant place and the pieces have to represent the same," said milliner-to-the-stars Louise Macdonald.
"Where Ascot is often seen as slightly more understated and classic, the Dubai World Cup is about fun and colour. Creating pieces for this market is just fun. It's also a challenge designing for a city which houses so many different cultures. Everybody wants something different and it keeps things exciting."
A milliner for 17 years, Macdonald began her career in England making hats for film and television productions.
Working in one of London's best costume houses, she produced headwear for world-famous actors to complement their movie roles, including a bowler hat for Tom Cruise's role in Far and Away and a bonnet for Minnie Driver in a television series she appeared in before she hit the big time.
Macdonald gives her top tips when buying a hat:
* If you're heading out to buy a hat or fascinator to match an outfit, remember to take your outfit with you.
* Go for bright colours with a bit of sparkle as this will instantly give you a look which works for both day and night.
* Keep things simple.
* Make an effort and be critical. Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself.
* Be realistic about your own skin tones and colours and wear things which suit you.
* If you really don't have time to sort anything out until the last minute, go for simple and comfortable.

Threads for the turf
"Louise Macdonald, an Australian milliner who has designed hats for several race events including the Melbourne Cup and the Dubai World Cup, believes a hat with an undulating brim is the best option for a long, floaty dress but the colour needs to be chosen carefully.
"If your dress is multi-coloured, do not wear a multi-coloured hat as the outfit will be too busy," she says. "Pick out a particular colour in the dress or shoes and match the hat to that colour."
(...) Macdonald agrees and believes this trend for block colour can be used to update stylish classics. "Contrasting colours are very popular this season," she says.
If you plan to wear a trouser suit, a small hat is the best choice, says Macdonald. "A fedora or trilby hat looks masculine but elegant," she says. "If you want to wear a skirt suit, brimless hats or straw berets are the best choice."
According to Macdonald, wearing fascinators with tailored suits is a trend of the past. "The elegant sculpted headpiece has replaced the fascinator," she says. "Twists and turns of straw and braid perched delicately on one side of the head are de rigeur for 2009. Cocktail hats – a cross between a fascinator and a small brimless hat — worn forward and perched above the right eyebrow, are becoming popular."
Go for a contrast – Macdonald believes hair colour should also influence your choice of hat.
"It is better to have some contrast," she says. "For example, if you have black hair, a black hat can get lost. With dark hair, a medium or light-coloured hat is preferable."
Wearing a hat demands a simple hair style, such as a low bun, or styling your hair so it sits away from your face, says Macdonald. "One simple option is to wear your hair back and low to the left of your head and wear the hat tipped forward and to the right," she says. "Experiment with the hat to see if it looks better worn straight or tipped at a jaunty angle."

Get a headstart
For a cool, chic look sans feathers and flowers go for Louise MacDonald's creations. Based on different types of caps, her hats made from vintage straw are designed to complement the season's trendy 1960s-style short dresses and patent leather accessories.
Over the last 17 years MacDonald has created hats for several film and television productions in the UK. Minnie Driver, Tom Cruise, Helena Bonham Carter and Vanessa Redgrave are among the many stars who have worn her creations on screen. Her tips on buying a hat included:
* Take your dress along to ensure that the hat is the right colour.
* The hat colour need not match with the dress. You could go for a contrasting colour, but then make a link between your hat and your outfit through complementing accessories.
* A tall hat can add height to a round face, while a wide brimmed hat is better for a long face.
* Look for a hat that suits your personality and makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Let it go to your head
"I e-mailed the milliner Louise Macdonald with details of my dress and asked her opinion on two hats that I especially liked – the Black and Cream Bitalli, which features black and white open-faced flowers on the crown, or the Gala Supreme, a brilliant red straw hat with swirls of fabric on top.
"It's best if you are over 5 foot 4 inches approximately to carry them off," she advises. "Otherwise they tend to swamp you. You will look better in a smaller or brimless hat."
OK, so scratch those.
Ms Macdonald also offers other tips about face size when choosing a hat style. The crown of the hat should not be narrower than your cheek bones. And, she says, if you want your face to look longer, try a taller crown. If you have a long face, steer away from the taller crowns.
Still, all that being said, the milliner tells her clients to be daring with styles and to have fun wearing the hats."
